Magnus Kald

This interview preserves a victim’s account of life in Estonia during Successive Soviet and German occupations. The victim recalls the arrival of Red Army soldiers in 1939, the atmosphere surrounding the 1940 and 1941 elections, and the activities of local communist. They describe the Soviet requisitioning practices, contact with Red Army soldiers, and witnessing the aftermath of torture and executions at Kuressaare Castle.

Abstract (English)	Magnus Kald recalls the peoples’ attitude towards Soviet-Estonian Mutual Assistance Treaty in 1939. Saw Red Army soldiers entering Saaremaa the same year. Talks about elections in 1940 and 1941. Mentions local communists, their activities and fate during World War II. Radios and bicycles were requisitioned by the Soviet authorities in 1941. In detail talks about his contact with Red Army soldiers. Saw the bodies of people who were tortured and murdered in Kuressaare Castle in 1941. During the German occupation of Estonia (1941-1944) there was rationing of petroleum. People made self-made torches and vodka. During the Great Escape to the West in 1944 a family stayed at his home for a couple of weeks, because they were swindled. Magnus Kald tried to escape to Sweden but was caught by German military police. Recollects the fate of his brother, fishing and border control during the Soviet occupations.

Mainib kohalikke kommuniste ja nende tegevusi ning saatust Teise maailmasõja ajal. Nõukogude võim rekvireeris raadiod ja jalgrattad 1941. aastal. Detailselt räägib enda kokkupuudetest Punaarmee sõduritega. Nägi inimeste laipu, kes piinati ja hukati Kuressaare lossihoovis 1941. aastal. Saksa okupatsiooni ajal oli petrooleum normeeritud. Inimesed tegid tõrvikuid ja salaviina. Suure põgenemise ajal viibis paar nädalat tema kodus üks perekond, kes olid ülevedaja käest petta saanud. Üritas ise ka Rootsi põgeneda, aga saadi Saksa sõjaväepolitsei poolt kätte. Meenutab enda venna saatust, kalastamist ja piirikontrolli Nõukogude okupatsioonide aegadel.
